Make-Over #6: Curls Allowed: The Return of the Hippie Perm

“Hi HairInManila,

I landed on your blog desperately looking for a reliable salon in the city. Unfortunately, my hair got chemically damaged very recently due to a perming treatment. It has gotten very dry, frizzy, unmanageable and in other ways I never imagined. :( My hair is medium in length and I would dare chop it off just so I could get rid of it! Is there any chance you know of a treatment for such? Or a makeover that’s looking to transform a hideous hair into something very nice? Hehe. Hope to hear from you very soon for I can no longer have this thing hanging on my head. Thank you very much! – Pam”

How can I say no? As my first-ever reader-volunteer-model, I wanted to give Pam a fantastic make-over! I decided to set her up with one of my favorite salons owned by one of my favorite stylists in town: Philippe’s Salon!
With Becca accompanying her, here’s how Pam’s curls were rescued as well as an inside look at this chic salon that’s hidden away from the metro.

Perms are hard to manage, but with the right cut and products, its beauty can last!

Make-Over #5: Punk pixie: Short hair that’s girl pretty

One lazy Saturday, HairInManila contributor Becca Rodriguez texted me that she was getting bored with her hair and that she wanted to get a make-over! When I asked what she had in mind, she said “I want a boy cut! Like really really short!”

My text reply: :D

This post will be about new things! A new salon in town, a new hair care brand that recently launched in the Philippines, and a new look for women who are tired of their long hair!

Read on to see what happened when Becca headed out to the new Studio Fix salon by Alex Carbonell in Greenbelt 5 for her wish of a punk pixie look!

Remember Becca’s super curly hair before? She’s back to try on a new short ‘do!

Make-Over #4: Get the look – Lauren Conrad

I know I shouldn’t be “working” during the holidays, but I don’t really consider this blog as work :)

For this story, I was thinking of making one of those “get the celebrity looks” story you usually see in the magazines. I got in touch with Agoo if she had any celebrity in mind and she replied excitedly, “Lauren Conrad from The Hills!” Even better, she already had a colleague ready to volunteer.

(Disclaimer, I’ve never watched that show, so I had no idea who Lauren Conrad was. A quick google and I was quickly up to date :p )

As to who would do the look, the first one that came to mind was that quaint salon in Makati where stars like Lucy Torres trust all their hair needs: Hairworks Salon. A quick call to the owner, Jasmine Lisbona, and a schedule was set!

With Agoo documenting the make-over, let’s see what happened!

Make-Over #3: From Bohemian Long to Chic Short

I remember a few years ago when my girlfriend was moving to her new job in the media industry and decided to go for a new look by cutting off her long black hair. At first, she was really apprehensive about it. After all, if it didn’t work out, there was no turning back! Fortunately though, the result was fantastic and she looked great with her new chic hair style.

(On a side note, the first thing her friends asked her was if we broke up :p Do all women change their looks when they break up?)

For my next entry, I wanted to do a long-to-short hair cut make-over. Becca Rodriguez quickly replied to my text to tell me that her friend, Nina Laurel, wanted to volunteer! So I scheduled her for a visit to the Jesi Mendez’s Salon in Promenade with Becca accompanying her to document the experience.

Hopefully, this story can help those of you readers who are still undecided if you want to try a short look to go for it and chop it all off :)

Nina has had long hair for a long time! Time for a new ‘do!

Makeover #2: Bye Bye Curls

I’ve known Philippine Star columnist Becca Rodriguez for a couple of years now and she is one of the few friends I have whose curly hair has become her trademark. I remember an incident from way back where it took a stylist nearly an hour to blow-dry Becca’s hair straight, which unfortunately lasted only for 2 hours before it curled back to its original form.

I was quite surprised (and pleased!) when Becca volunteered to be the model for my rebonding make-over story. Excitedly, I called up David’s Salon in Podium and immediately set an appointment for her. For all the girls out there who have wavy or curly hair, I hope this little rebonding story will encourage you to take the leap and go for that new look!

Becca’s been curly her whole life and this will be her first rebond ever!

Makeover #1: Getting an easy to maintain look

For our first official blog entry, I decided to start with something everyone loves: a makeover!

We’ve always heard about how the typical Filipina is conservative with her looks. And a couple of years ago when rebonding was the rage, it was hard to convince a girl to go for coloring or to cut her hair when every celebrity and TV commercial showed the same long black straight hair. But in recent years, people have finally begun to become more confident and experimental with their hair. Fear of color has begun to drop as celebrities like Kris Aquino and Lucy Torres-Gomez show off their radiant colored-locks.

So for this makeover story, I contacted my friend Vicky Tensuan to find someone who would go for a simple hair cut and color service. Her sister, Anna, happily accepted. I got in touch with Piandré Salon in Greenbelt 1 to do job. Let’s see what happened!

This is Anna. She wants a new look that is easy to maintain as she grows out her hair.
